The event served to highlight how the anaesthetic community is working together to improve healthcare for under-resourced countries; from the delivery of the SAFE obstetric course in Uganda, to the development of a nurse anaesthesia training programme in Liberia. There were exhibitions from e-SAFE, e-Learning Anaesthesia, Lifebox, Mothers of Africa and Diamedica as part of the programme. The day also served to showcase the RCoA’s e-Learning Anaesthesia project, undertaken with e-Learning for Healthcare, that has grown to over 1,000 sessions covering 400 hours of learning. HRH The Princess Royal ended the meeting by thanking all those involved in the highlighted projects for their enthusiasm and hard work.

About the e-SAFE DVD:
This exciting e-learning project in anaesthesia, is aimed at anaesthetists working in resource-limited situations. This DVD has been developed through a collaboration between the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the AAGBI and the WFSA, and will be distributed free in developing countries. The DVD feautres many practical tutorials about anaesthesia, which can be studied by the user or taught by a teacher in a classroom. Many video clips are included demonstrating safe anaesthesia practice, in particular the management of common emergency situations. The DVD also contains back copies of Update in Anaesthesia, Tutorial of the Week and Continuing Education in Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain. The DVD does not require internet access, making it practical for remote locations. It will run on PC and MAC computers and can be copied onto a hard disk.
