WFSA Research Grant 2011
For the first year, the WFSA, according to the proposal of its Scientific Affairs Committee, has decided to create in 2011 three research grants of $8,000 each to allow young doctors to start a research programme abroad, hopefully in view of a PhD, during a period of six months to one year.
The money is mainly devoted to the travel expenses, the hosting laboratory taking in charge an access to meals and accommodation.
The candidates had to send an application form including letters of recommendation from their Head of Department and the President of their National Society, and a certificate of the hosting laboratory indicating its agreement to receive the fellow and to bring assistance to perform her/his work.
The applications were sent to the Scientific Affairs Committee Chairman before October 1st. 2011 and each of them were dispatched to two committee members for evaluation and selection.
The three winners are
- Dr.Ruslan BALTAGA, born in 1975, assistant professor, working in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, in Chisinau, Moldova. His project consists of development of patient safety through implementation of new clinical tools in the Republic of Moldova. A safer practice has become a major public health priority in this country and a first attempt will be to disseminate the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. These tools based upon techniques of quality assurance and evaluation of professional practice has the aim to reduce a morbidity and mortality remaining at a high level in Moldova. The applicant will be trained to quality assurance and risk management at the Harvard School of Public Health and the research coordination will be insured by Dr. Atul Gawande, at the origin of the Lifebox programme.
- Dr. Angelina VAKHLYAEVA, born in 1986, is currently research fellow in the Department of Anaesthesiology of the Saint Petersburg Medical Academy. Her project is to start a research centre on Malignant Hyperthermia in Saint Petersburg. At the present time there is no MH centre all over the Russia and the goal is to implement a laboratory able to provide means of MH diagnosis. The applicant will travel to Lille, France, to be trained in the Professor Krivosic’s laboratory, acting in this field since many years and recognised at the international level. Her application is supported by Professor Yuri Polushin, President of the Russian Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiology, and by Professor Konstantin Lebedinskyi.
- Dr. Yun-Tai YAO, born in 1978, has
already a solid background in research and is involved currently in a programme
on the organ protective effects of remote ischemic conditioning in CABG
patients in the frame of Hospital Foundation for young doctors. The title of
his project: Sevoflurane post conditioning and beta-blockers is the
continuation of a research for his PhD thesis constituted by an experimental
investigation on isolated rat hearts. His project is supported by Dr Wei Chao,
associate professor of anaesthesia, from the Massachusetts Hospital, Harvard
Medical School.
